Pros and Cons of Music Therapy

Music can provide a lot of benefits to individuals and enhance the quality of life. Music can help you achieve a high level of relaxation and peace after day stress.

Music therapy involves listening to songs, playing musical instruments or singing as a way of improving the wellness of an individual. Psychiatrists and physicians recommend music therapy as a treatment to a wide range of problems or special needs.

 

Pros:

1. Child development: Music therapy provides a unique experience in a child’s development process. It can affect a child’s behavioral changes, contributes to the development of a child’s communication skills, social, and cognitive skills.

2. Emotional growth: Music can help you improve your emotional level by listening to the lyrics of a particular song. When listening to a song you love, it can positively impact your feelings.

3. Improve symptoms of depression: Music can be recommended as a way to treat depression conditions. Listening to music can improve your mood, reduce your blood pressure as well as lower your respiratory rate. This helps you reduce the symptoms of depression and other mood disorders.

4. Improve the quality of life: Music therapy can help built relationships and create a positive environment that sets the occasion for successful growth.

5. Improve academic performance: Music can help the child to be more responsive, improve his/her listening skills. The songs played can have a positive influence on the child and this can help them improve their academic performance.

Cons:

1. Hearing problem: Listening to loud music can make you develop hearing problems. Continuous use of earphones and headphones can also worsen the condition since it will be difficult to regulate the volume.

2. Trigger memories: Music can trigger past memories and sometimes these memories may not be good or pleasant as you want them to be making you feel bad.

3. Increase anxiety levels: Music is not a one-size-fits-all experience. Different people like a different types of music or genre and others don’t like music at all. Hearing a particular song, artist or genre of music may make you more emotional or have a negative response both psychologically and emotionally even when you’re in public place.

4. Not suitable for dementia patients: Although music can help reduce stress and enable them to unwind, it can create false memories and confusion for those with memory problems.

5. Over-emotional: If you’re depressed and listen to a sad song, you may become more depressed and this can also increase your anxiety or have emotional disorders.

6. Misleading lyrics: Some of the lyrics used in the latest songs are misleading the younger generation.

7. Emotional flooding: Music can trigger powerful emotions and sometimes you may end up crying at the end of the song.

8. Overstimulation: If a therapist is not careful about the sound stimulus created to support an infant’s ability to thrive, it may result in overstimulation and this creates distress on the child.
